CIF: Foreign Students Will Continue to Play Varsity Sports in California

The California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) has voted down a proposed change to CIF Bylaw 209. As presented, the rule change would have prevented foreign and exchange students from participating in sports at the varsity level in any sport participated in during the year prior to arriving at a CIF school.

Only students in foreign exchange programs can play. The rule that did pass bars eligibility for all students transferring from a foreign school. The language passed means even American expats who send their students to school back in the US will be ineligible for a year.

Does this mean that foreign students may play varsity athletics in CA even if they played on their foreign country school or club team within 1 year? Confused!

The CIF proposal was turned down. Foreign students are allowed to pay varsity sports at schools attended. CIF eligiility rules still apply, but the recent proposal to limit participation did not pass.

My daughter plays sports, has 3.5 + gpa and was just selected to go out of country her entire senior year through an Exchange program. She will be required to go to school but no credits will be given toward her CA high school. She will return and will be. required to attend an additional year of high school. By missing her Senior year playing sports, is she eligible upon her return since her year away did not count. She will be 18 during this time in question to play sports.
